May/June 2016 Schedule at the Cleveland Cinematheque

[Press release from the Cleveland Cinematheque.]

Six film noir classics from Mexico, actor Willem Dafoe, and ten movies featuring famous Republicans are just a few of the attractions at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque in May and June. The 30-year-old specialty film exhibitor will also premiere 13 exclusive new films and revive other classic movies in showings at its new Peter B. Lewis Theater, 11610 Euclid Avenue in the Uptown district of University Circle.

“Mexico at Midnight: Film Noir from Mexican Cinema’s Golden Age,” running May 7 through 24, is a six-film series derived from a very highly acclaimed, seven-film retrospective of the same name presented last July at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  It consists of tough, stylish, sexy, cynical crime films made by the Mexican film industry during the 1940s and 1950s, starring such south-of-the-border luminaries as Dolores del Rio, María Félix, Pedro Armendáriz, and Arturo de Cordóva. All of the movies are coming from Mexico. According to The New York Times, “‘Mexico at Midnight’ overflows with fatalistic tales of passion, jealousy and betrayal.” The Village Voice concurred: “These are taut, fraught entertainments, every bit the equal of what Hollywood was crafting.”

“The Republicans Are Coming, the Republicans Are Coming,” running May 27 through June 26, is a series of ten classic films that showcase prominent members of the GOP who have made major contributions to the movies, either behind or in front of the cameras—or both. OUT 1: SPECTRE
France, 1974, Jacques Rivette
In this counterculture conspiracy thriller set in the early 1970s, a scam artist (Jean-Pierre Léaud) and a petty thief (Juliet Berto) uncover a possible secret society in Paris (“the Thirteen”) that includes members of two avant-garde theatre groups and some well-heeled professionals. This shortened version of Jacques Rivette’s long unreleased, eight-part, 13-hour Out 1: Noli Me Tangere (shown in January over four Thursday nights) is more a reimagining of the original work than a condensation of it. (It has a different structure and tone, and even contains footage that was not in the long version.) But it features the same all-star cast of French New Wave notables (Michael Lonsdale, Bernadette Lafont, Bulle Ogier, Françoise Fabian, Jean-François Stévenin, Barbet Schroeder, and Éric Rohmer) and the literary influences remain Balzac, Borges, and Lewis Carroll. THE WAVE
BØLGEN
Norway, 2015, Roar Uthaug
The U.S. is not the only country that makes disaster pictures, but ours usually aren’t submitted for Academy Awards (other than those for visual effects and sound). However, this new thriller—about a giant tsunami that threatens a scenic Norwegian tourist town—was Norway’s official submission for the 2016 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Despite some inevitable clichés, the movie is a nail-biter that doesn’t overlook the human dimension. “Adds credible writing and effective acting to gangbusters special effects, resulting in a white-knuckle experience a bit higher on the plausibility scale than what we're used to from Hollywood.” –The L.A. Times. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 104 min. www.magpictures.com

Poland/Ireland, 2015, Jerzy Skolimowski
The tense new film from the master Polish director of Deep End and Moonlighting was Poland’s submission for this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. It’s an alternately kinetic and contemplative kaleidoscope of contemporary life that delineates the interlocking lives of several characters—a lecherous film producer, a drug courier, a hot dog vendor, et al.—from 5:00 pm to 5:11 pm on one particular day in Warsaw. “[An] unorthodox answer to Hollywood action movies…Extraordinary.” –cinema scope. NIGHT FALLS
LA NOCHE AVANZA
Mexico, 1952, Roberto Gavaldón
In this hard-hitting Mexican noir, a brutish jai alai champion (Pedro Armendáriz) romances a series of women, discarding them like Kleenex, until he finally gets his comeuppance. “A richly sordid tale of double-double-crossing and multiple gambles.” –J. Hoberman, The NY Times. Subtitles. DCP. 85 min.

A Special Event!
Willem Dafoe in Person!
PASOLINI
France/Belgium/Italy, 2014, Abel Ferrara
Willem Dafoe returns to the Cinematheque! The Oscar-nominated actor will answer audience questions after a screening of a recent Abel Ferrara movie in which he plays the late, great Italian film director Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975), director of The Gospel According to Matthew, The Hawks and the Sparrows, The Canterbury Tales, and others. (He was the subject of a near-complete Cinematheque retrospective in 2014.) Ferrara paints a kaleidoscopic portrait of this controversial artist—a Christian Marxist poet, intellectual, and homosexual—on the last day of his life. In fragments intercut with imagined scenes from what would have been his next film, we watch Pasolini as he works on a new novel, does a press interview, and figures out how to avoid censorship on Sálo: 120 Days of Sodom. Ferrara clearly sees the boundary-pushing filmmaker as a kindred spirit, and Dafoe, in dark-framed glasses, does him full justice. With Maria de Medeiros, Giada Colagrande, and Ninetto Davoli. Cleveland premiere. Some subtitles. DCP. 84 min. Special admission $25; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, age 25 & under $20; no passes, twofers, or radio winners. Special thanks to Abel Ferrara and Funny Balloons (Peter Danner).

METROPOLIS (2002 restoration)
Germany, 1927, Fritz Lang
This is not the most complete extant version of Fritz Lang’s silent sci-fi masterpiece, but it is the longest cut distributed on 35mm film in the U.S. When first released in 2002, it was touted as the “definitive” Metropolis, having collated and cleaned up shots, scenes, and elements from all copies of the film known at that time. The soundtrack consisted of a new recording of Gottfried Huppertz’ original symphonic score. In any version, Metropolis is a visually staggering futuristic epic. Set in a city of gleaming skyscrapers, it delineates the disparity between the rich who lead lives of leisure above ground and the anonymous laborers who toil underground keeping the city’s monstrous machinery running smoothly—until a rebel robot leads a workers’ revolt! RIVER OF GRASS
USA, 1994, Kelly Reichardt
Here’s a new digital restoration of the acclaimed first feature by one of America’s premier independent filmmakers, Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy, Meek’s Cutoff, et al.). Shot on 16mm in her native Florida, the movie is a revisionist noir comedy about a bored suburban Miami housewife and an aimless handyman (indie filmmaker Larry Fessenden) who almost become outlaw lovers on the run after an accidental shooting. This funny, stylish film turns melodramatic crime-movie conventions upside down. Reichardt has called it "a road movie without the road, a love story without the love, and a crime story without the crime." Cleveland revival premiere. THE MASK (in 3-D)
aka EYES OF HELL
Canada, 1961, Julian Roffman
Canada’s first 3-D feature tells of an ancient tribal burial mask that causes the wearer to see gruesome psychedelic visions and commit unspeakable crimes. This low-budget shocker with stereoscopic nightmares by montage master Slavko Vorkapich (The Life and Death of 9413: a Hollywood Extra) was also Canada’s first full-length horror film. “At the risk of overstating things, [the film’s] trip sequences—with their emphasis on ritual, incantation, and a central figure struggling to cope with a violent psychosexual awakening—work to elevate The Mask beyond its earned place in Canuxploitation history and into the realm of avant-garde-tinged psychodrama, playing the same game (if not at all in the same league) as Maya Deren and Kenneth Anger.” -cinema scope. KIRSCHBLÜTEN – HANAMI
Germany/France, 2008, Doris Dörrie
One of the most beloved Roxanne T. Mueller Award winners in the history of the Cleveland Int’l Film Festival, this touching drama tells of a Bavarian husband and wife who decide to visit their grown children in Berlin and Tokyo—only to discover that their presence is a burden to them. Doris Dörrie takes the plot and theme of Ozu’s celebrated 1953 Japanese classic Tokyo Story into new and unexpected directions in this piercingly beautiful modern classic. Subtitles. 127 min. Special admission $10; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners. THE GREEN BERETS
USA, 1970, John Wayne, Ray Kellogg
This hawk’s-eye view of the Vietnam War stars John Wayne as a U.S. Special Forces colonel who gallantly leads the fight against the Vietcong and, along the way, makes a true believer out of a cynical American war correspondent (David Janssen). Lambasted by liberal critics when first released at the height of the antiwar protests, this film that was intended to honor the sacrifices of American soldiers is now regarded by some as an exciting and effective action movie. With Jim Hutton, Raymond St. Jacques, George Takei, et al. 35mm color & scope print! 141 min. Special admission $10; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners.

With Robert Forster and Joanna Cassidy (Blade Runner). “A strangely involving, idiosyncratic masterwork.” –The L.A. Times. Adults only! 35mm 107 min. Special admission $10; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners. New 4K Digital Restoration!
MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
USA, 1939, Frank Capra
James Stewart plays a greenhorn U.S. senator whose youthful idealism runs up against the chamber’s ingrained corruption (sound familiar?) in this fast-talking, inspiring political comedy that was branded anti-American by some in Washington when first released. Stewart was a lifelong Republican. But so was, surprisingly, the film’s populist, presumably progressive director, Frank (It’s a Wonderful Life) Capra. With Jean Arthur, Claude Rains, et al. 4K DCP. 129 min. Special admission $10; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners.

THE KING AND THE MOCKINGBIRD
LE ROI ET L’OISEAU
France, 1980, Paul Grimault
One of the great animated movies of all time is virtually unknown in America! Begun in 1947 but not completed until 1980 (after a long hiatus), this beloved French film was written by the great screenwriter Jacques Prévert (Children of Paradise) and proved a major influence on Hayao Miyazaki and other Studio Ghibli animators. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen, Grimault’s fairy tale is set in the highly vertical kingdom of Tachycardia, where tyrannical cross-eyed King Charles V + III = VIII + VIII = XVI pursues two lovers—a shepherdess and a chimney sweep—as they try to flee the kingdom with the aid of a mockingbird. Their flight takes them through the sunless depths of Tachycardia’s Lower City (think Metropolis), where they encounter bat-police and other strange creatures of the dark. The English-language version will show on Friday, and the English-subtitled version on Sunday. DCP. 83 min. www.rialtopicturres.com

NOTFILM
USA/UK, 2015, Ross Lipman
Notfilm is a feature-length documentary on one of the strangest all-star projects in the annals of cinema. In 1964 New York City, director Alan Schneider shot an avant-garde short movie written by Waiting for Godot author Samuel Beckett (his only screenplay), starring Buster Keaton, produced by Barney Rosset of Grove Press, and photographed by Oscar winner Boris Kaufman (brother of Dziga Vertov). It was entitled Film. In his new “kino-essay” Notfilm, director Ross Lipman, a veteran restorationist at UCLA, takes a long look at this short movie, stuffing his work with rare outtakes, previously unheard audio recordings of production meetings, and new interviews . Notfilm will be followed by Film itself, now newly restored. “A charming, earnest, sometimes ungainly mixture of history, criticism and high-minded gossip.” –The NY Times. Cleveland premiere. DCP. Total 150 min. Special admission $10; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners. http://filmbysamuelbeckett.com/

EL CID
USA, 1961, Anthony Mann
Charlton Heston plays the 11th-century Castilian knight Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar (known as El Cid), who helped stop Islamic world domination by driving the Moors out of feudal Spain. (They had to pry his sword from his cold, dead hands). Sophia Loren, Raf Vallone, and Herbert Lom co-star in this lavish historical super-production—one of the best ever—from a director mostly known for his Westerns. Like Ben-Hur (released two years earlier), El Cid was shot in 70mm and boasted a great Miklós Rózsa score. We will show an archival 35mm color & scope print of the 1993 restoration of this celebrated epic that Martin Scorsese crusaded for; special thanks to Mark McElhatten. 184 min. Special admission $12; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, age 25 & under $9; no passes, twofers, or radio winners.

New Digital Restoration!
DESTINY
DER MÜDE TOD
Germany, 1921, Fritz Lang
Here’s a new digital restoration of the first great film by the director of Metropolis (see 5/21 & 22), M, and many others. A dazzling blend of German Romanticism, German Expressionism, and Orientalism, the film is an elaborate fantasy in which Death grants a young woman three chances to thwart fate and save the life of her fiancé. She finds herself in a trio of tales set, respectively, in storied Persia, 17th-century Venice, and mythic China. The special effects in this 95-year-old work still impress. “Fritz Langs film Destiny opened my eyes to the poetic expressiveness of the cinema.” –Luis Buñuel. Cleveland revival premiere. Silent with music track. DCP. 98 min. www.kinolorber.com

NEON BULL
BOI NEON
Brazil/Uruguay/Netherlands, 2015, Gabriel Mascaro
A handsome, itinerant cowhand who helps deliver bulls to rodeos in northeast Brazil dreams of becoming a fashion designer; in his spare time he creates exotic fantasy costumes for the “mother” in his makeshift work family. This sensuous, painterly drama—one of the most acclaimed films of the past year—is a rodeo movie that explores gender and body issues as much as animal wrangling. “Not since Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz rutted in Jamón Jamón have meat and sex made such provocative bedfellows.” –Variety.  “Lyrically involving and deeply sensual, Neon Bull showcases a full-bodied artist in command of his form.” –indieWIRE. No one under 18 admitted! Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 101 min. www.kinolorber.com

With Richard Lynch; a Golan-Globus production for Cannon Films. 35mm. 107 min. Special admission $10; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners.

USA, 1992, Clint Eastwood
Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, and Richard Harris star in Eastwood’s somber, elegiac Western about a reformed killer who returns to his violent ways to collect a bounty he desperately needs. A meditation on both morality and mortality, Eastwood’s final Western takes a fresh, nuanced, sobering look at frontier heroism and justice. Winner of four Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, and Supporting Actor (Hackman). “Magnificent.” –Time Out Film Guide. 35mm. 131 min. EL CLAN
Argentina/Spain, 2015, Pablo Trapero
The new film from one of Argentina’s most prominent filmmakers was the country’s official entry for this year’s Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. The Puccios are a seemingly normal, respectable, upper-middle-class Buenos Aires family. But in reality they’re criminals who kidnap their wealthy neighbors, hold them for ransom, and then murder them. Based on a notorious true case. “A muscular, Hollywood-style account of the Puccio fiasco.” –Variety. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 108 min.
