It’s
just like a Star Wars movie, live, happening right in front of you! Only with
better acting and dialogue, probably.
Strongsville’s
AA Kenpo Karate Studios, following the lead of various similar classes and cosplayers nationwide,
now offers “Jedi Lightsaber” classes, a sort of modified form of Japanese
swordsmanship tied in with the Star Wars film series.
It’s
actually pretty clever, really; arguably one of the best ideas George Lucas had
in all of Star Wars was to tap into the Asian martial-arts traditions and
conflicts of good master/bad master, an Eastern vibe that most mainstream movie
critics didn’t even take very seriously as drama at all until CROUCHING TIGER,
HIDDEN DRAGON came along. Lucas was way ahead of mainstream tastemakers on that
score.

Kenpo Karate’s dojo will hold two Star Wars nights, one on Friday, Feb. 12,
with a Jedi class first, then followed by a screening of STAR WARS EPISODE II:
ATTACK OF THE CLONES. Then on Friday, Feb. 26, the Jedi class will accompany
STAR WARS EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE SITH.
One
need not be a current student of AA Kenpo to attend, participate and enjoy,
said Master Alan C. Babinec. Kids who
join in can be ages 4 to 12. The “Lightsaber class” happens from 6 p.m. to 6:30
p.m., and then afterwards the movies unreel with snacks and ice cream.
For
a young Jedi to take a swordsmanship lesson costs $5. Viewing the movie is a
$10 admission. The martial-arts lesson plus the movie, thus, is $15.
