[Press release from Cleveland Cinemas.]
Director Rolf de Heer’s films
have received international acclaim, including prizes at the Cannes Film
Festival, as well as praise from Cleveland audiences when his works have been
featured in the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF). In fact, de Heer
was honored at the 31st annual CIFF with a Director’s Spotlight
series highlighting some of his greatest
works to date at that time.
De Heer’s latest film, CHARLIE’S COUNTRY, will be opening on Friday, June 5th at the Capitol Theatre (1390 W. 65th St., Cleveland) for an exclusive
engagement.
De Heer will be at the Capitol Theatre to
participate in a post-screening Q&A following the 7:10 PM showing of CHARLIE’S COUNTRY on Monday, June 8th. Bill
Guentzler, Artistic Director for the Cleveland International Film Festival,
will moderate and host the Q&A.
CHARLIE’S COUNTRY tells the story of
Charlie (David Gulpilil), a man living in a remote Aboriginal community in the
northern part of Australia. He is a warrior past his prime. As the government
increases its stranglehold over the community’s traditional way of life,
Charlie becomes lost between two cultures. His new modern life offers him a way
to survive but, ultimately, it is one he has no power over. Finally fed up when
his gun, his newly crafted spear and his best friend’s jeep are confiscated,
Charlie heads into the wild on his own, to live the old way. However Charlie
hasn’t reckoned on where he might end up, nor on how much life has changed
since the old ways...
Star David Gulpilil received the Best Actor
Award - Un Certain Regard at the 2014
Cannes Film Festival and also co-wrote the film’s screenplay with de Heer.
Admission is $6.00 for the Q&A showing on
Monday, June 8th due
to Cleveland Cinemas' Bargain Monday policy. Regular
admission to shows other than Monday are $9.50 for adults after 6:00 PM, $6.50
for seniors. Matinee tickets Friday to Sunday are $6.75 and $6.00 Monday to
Thursday. Tickets can be purchased at the theatre box office or online at clevelandcinemas.com.
About Rolf de Heer:
Director Rolf de Heer has been making feature
films for thirty years, and in that time he's managed to complete fourteen of
them (there are numbers of others that haven't been completed, one way or the
other). The films are usually low of budget but high in impact. They generally
have something to say about the human condition. More often than not, each
succeeding film is quite different from the previous.
With these fourteen films, Rolf has had a
great measure of success...four different films in Official Selection at the Cannes
Film Festival (including the Jury Prize for Ten
Canoes in Un Certain Regard);
two films in Competition at the Venice Film Festival (including Bad Boy Bubby, which won both
the Jury Prize and the Critics' Prize there); films selected for Berlin, Toronto,
Telluride, London and, of course, Cleveland.
