July/August 2014 schedule at the Cleveland Cinematheque

Sixty classic Warner Bros cartoons from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s will show in the upcoming Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque series “Still Looney After All These Years.” This five-program retrospective will run from July 5 through August 2 in the Cinematheque’s regular theatre, Aitken Auditorium at the Cleveland Institute of Art, 11141 East Boulevard in University Circle, www.cia.edu/cinematheque. Every movie will be projected from 35mm film.

 

“This is the first Looney Tunes series we’ve ever presented in our 28-year-history,” said Cinematheque Director John Ewing. “And summer seems the ideal time to reconnect with old friends like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety, Roadrunner, Wile E. Coyote, and director Chuck Jones.”

 

The Cinematheque’s Looney Tunes series will be supplemented in July and August with new international films, second-run movies, and feature-length film classics, including four rarities by neglected French master Jean Grémillon. The complete two-month film schedule follows.

 

Starting July 1, admission to most Cinematheque screenings will be $9; Cinematheque members and those age 25 & under $7. A second film on the same day costs an additional $7. Any exceptions to these prices are noted below. Free parking for most Cinematheque films is available in the adjacent CIA lot, located off of East Boulevard. JODOROWSKY’S DUNE

After directing the midnight/cult movie classics El Topo and The Holy Mountain, Chilean-French auteur Alejandro Jodorowsky turned his attention to a grand, multi-million-dollar film version of Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi novel Dune. With a cast consisting of Orson Welles, Salvador Dali, Mick Jagger, David Carradine, and others, art work by H.R. Giger and French comic book artist Moebius, special effects by Dan O'Bannon, and music by Pink Floyd, this was going to be a movie to remember. Unfortunately, for lack of financing, it was never made. But hundreds of drawings and sketches from the project still survive, and they are animated for this inspiring new documentary. Equally animated is the ebullient Jodorowsky, now 85, who walks us through his visionary masterpiece that might have been (which nevertheless influenced Star Wars, Alien, and other sci-fi films that followed). In June longtime local independent filmmaker Richard Myers received the 2014 Cleveland Arts Prize Lifetime Achievement Award. Tonight we present two of Myers’ earliest shot-in-NE-Ohio movies, each lasting a little over 20 minutes. First Time Here (1964) is a cautionary apocalyptic fantasy centered around an atomic bomb display at a carnival. When the film came out 50 years ago, legendary film critic Pauline Kael called it the “major discovery of the Ann Arbor Film Festival.” Coronation (1965) is an impressively elaborate low-budget surrealist spectacle in which the “crown” is passed from one generation to the next. Germany has Bayreuth, but Cleveland has a new digital restoration of Fritz Lang's epic film version of the medieval Nordic legend that inspired Wagner's "Ring Cycle."  This two-part silent fantasy, the most elaborate and expensive German movie of its day, was co-written by Lang and his wife Thea von Harbou, with music by Gottfried Huppertz. (The three would also collaborate on Lang's next film, Metropolis.)
