July/August 2014 schedule at the Cleveland Cinematheque

Sixty classic Warner Bros cartoons from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s will show in the upcoming Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque series “Still Looney After All These Years.” This five-program retrospective will run from July 5 through August 2 in the Cinematheque’s regular theatre, Aitken Auditorium at the Cleveland Institute of Art, 11141 East Boulevard in University Circle, www.cia.edu/cinematheque. Every movie will be projected from 35mm film.

“This is the first Looney Tunes series we’ve ever presented in our 28-year-history,” said Cinematheque Director John Ewing. “And summer seems the ideal time to reconnect with old friends like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety, Roadrunner, Wile E. Coyote, and director Chuck Jones.”

The Cinematheque’s Looney Tunes series will be supplemented in July and August with new international films, second-run movies, and feature-length film classics, including four rarities by neglected French master Jean Grémillon. The complete two-month film schedule follows.

Starting July 1, admission to most Cinematheque screenings will be $9; Cinematheque members and those age 25 & under $7. A second film on the same day costs an additional $7. Any exceptions to these prices are noted below. Free parking for most Cinematheque films is available in the adjacent CIA lot, located off of East Boulevard. For further information, call John Ewing or Tim Harry at (216) 421-7450 or send an email to cinema@cia.edu.

JODOROWSKY’S DUNE
USA/France, 2013, Frank Pavich
After directing the midnight/cult movie classics El Topo and The Holy Mountain, Chilean-French auteur Alejandro Jodorowsky turned his attention to a grand, multi-million-dollar film version of Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi novel Dune. With a cast consisting of Orson Welles, Salvador Dali, Mick Jagger, David Carradine, and others, art work by H.R. Giger and French comic book artist Moebius, special effects by Dan O'Bannon, and music by Pink Floyd, this was going to be a movie to remember. Unfortunately, for lack of financing, it was never made. But hundreds of drawings and sketches from the project still survive, and they are animated for this inspiring new documentary. Equally animated is the ebullient Jodorowsky, now 85, who walks us through his visionary masterpiece that might have been (which nevertheless influenced Star Wars, Alien, and other sci-fi films that followed). Unmissable! Blu-ray. 90 min. jodorowskysdune.com  Jodorowsky’s latest film, The Dance of Reality, shows 7/18 & 19, and another documentary about an unfinished motion picture magnum opus, Persistence of Vision, shows 7/19 at 6:45.

THE DANCE OF REALITY
LA DANZA DE LA REALIDAD
Chile/France, 2013, Alejandro Jodorowsky
The first feature in 23 years from the director of the cult classics El Topo, The Holy Mountain, and Santa Sangre (see 7/17 at 6:00) is a triumph! The NY Times calls it "something very close to a masterpiece," and The Village Voice says it “may be Alejandro Jodorowsky's best film." The movie finds the octogenarian director, a self-proclaimed "psychomagician," returning to the coastal Chile of his childhood to tell a singularly strange tale of growing up. The result is a Spanish-language Amarcord that blends autobiography with metaphor, myth, and poetry, and teems with grotesque and colorful characters, surreal incidents, and indelible images. Essential viewing! "The work of a highly disciplined anarchist, whose principal weapon against authority is his own imagination." -The NY Times. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. PERSISTENCE OF VISION
Canada/UK/USA, 2012, Kevin Schreck
This account of what has been called “the greatest animated film never made” focuses on the three-decade effort of Richard Williams (Oscar-winning animation director of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?) to realize his dream project, The Thief and the Cobbler. This epic inspired by the Arabian Nights was ultimately taken out of Williams’ hands while still unfinished, and released in various bastardized versions around the world. Filmmaker Kevin Schreck tells the story behind this aborted magnum opus by weaving together mind-blowing animation, rare archival footage, and interviews with key artists who worked on the project. “Grade ‘A’…[A] Herculean accomplishment…A heartbreaking account of a thwarted animated masterpiece.” –Indiewire. “An amazing film about an amazing artist…If it plays near you, rush out and see Persistence of Vision.” –Bill Plympton. MANAKAMANA
Nepal/USA, 2013, Stephanie Spray, Pacho Velez
Nepalese pilgrims (and a few animals) travel by cable car to a mountaintop Hindu temple in this mesmerizing new observational film from Harvard's Sensory Ethnography Lab (Sweetgrass, Leviathan). The movie is constructed from a series of static 10-minute takes (the duration of both the mile-and-a-half journey skyward and the roll of 16mm film used to record each trip) which capture an assortment of male and female passengers as they float past a changing landscape, ascend through the clouds, and arrive at their destination. "Five stars (highest rating)...Manakamana is often funny, but it also possesses a serious and sublime spirituality... You could hardly ask for a more beautiful vision of souls in transit." -Time Out New York. "A haunting experience that requires patience but that offers spiritual, philosophical, and aesthetic rewards beyond the immediate power of words to describe." -Boston Globe. Cleveland premiere. TWO BY RICHARD MYERS
USA, 1964-65, Richard Myers
In June longtime local independent filmmaker Richard Myers received the 2014 Cleveland Arts Prize Lifetime Achievement Award. Tonight we present two of Myers’ earliest shot-in-NE-Ohio movies, each lasting a little over 20 minutes. First Time Here (1964) is a cautionary apocalyptic fantasy centered around an atomic bomb display at a carnival. When the film came out 50 years ago, legendary film critic Pauline Kael called it the “major discovery of the Ann Arbor Film Festival.” Coronation (1965) is an impressively elaborate low-budget surrealist spectacle in which the “crown” is passed from one generation to the next. George Manupelli of the Ann Arbor Film Festival called it “a film without a dull moment.” 16mm. Total 47 min. plus intermission. www.richardmysersfilms.com

Britain, 2013, Richard Ayoade
Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska star in the acclaimed new film by British comic actor and director Richard Ayoade, whose previous (and first) theatrical feature, Submarine, was one of the highlights of 2010. Based on a Dostoyevsky novella, The Double tells of a mousy office clerk, Simon James, who is startled to discover that his new co-worker, James Simon, looks exactly like him, but is as confident, charismatic, and popular as Simon is shy, timid, and lonely. Yet, 70 years after the end of WWII, this diasporic ethnic group still faces prejudice, institutionalized discrimination, and ethnic hatred from nationalists and resurgent white supremacists. New Digital Restoration!
DIE NIBELUNGEN: SIEGFRIED
Germany, 1924, Fritz Lang
Germany has Bayreuth, but Cleveland has a new digital restoration of Fritz Lang's epic film version of the medieval Nordic legend that inspired Wagner's "Ring Cycle."  This two-part silent fantasy, the most elaborate and expensive German movie of its day, was co-written by Lang and his wife Thea von Harbou, with music by Gottfried Huppertz. (The three would also collaborate on Lang's next film, Metropolis.) Siegfried, the saga's magical first part, follows the pure, fearless titular hero as he slays a dragon and asks for the hand of Princess Kriemhild. The nightmarish second part, Kriemhild's Revenge (shown tomorrow night), chronicles the cataclysmic destruction wrought by the now blood-thirsty Kriemhild after she is grievously wronged by a rival tribe. With color tints and a new recording of the Huppertz score. Subtitles. Blu-ray. 149 min. (Part 1); 131 min. Part 3 of Rohmer’s “Tales of the Four Seasons” has a 93% “fresh” rating on RottenTomatoes.com. “The sunniest and funniest of Rohmer’s seasonal tales...Wonderfully witty...As suspenseful and manipulative as a classical farce.” –Time Out London. WOODEN CROSSES
LES CROIX DES BOIS
France, 1932, Raymond Bernard
We commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War with a little-known-in-America French masterpiece that is often called that country’s All Quiet on the Western Front. The film follows a patriotic student as he idealistically joins the French army, then experiences the harrowing, unheroic realities of trench warfare. Battle scenes from this WWI classic were repurposed in John Ford's The World Moves On (1934) and Howard Hawks' The Road to Glory (1936). With Pierre Blanchar, Charles Vanel. Antonin Artaud, et al. MISS LOVELY
India, 2012, Ashim Ahluwalia
Here's a new kind of Indian movie, neither Bollywood nor Bengali art film. Set in the netherworld of Mumbai/Bombay's exploitation-movie industry during the 1980s, the film focuses on two brothers who secretly produce and peddle sleazy sex-horror flicks. Enter Pinky—an alluring and mysterious young ingenue who just may be their ticket out of the grindhouse ghetto. Part noir melodrama, part authentic period piece, this visually stunning work from a director steeped in American avant-garde cinema evokes Fassbinder, Scorsese, Oshima, Dario Argento, and others. "A shock to the system—An Indian film like I’ve never seen...Mesmerizing." -Jonathan Romney, Sight & Sound. Cleveland theatrical premiere. Subtitles. Blu-ray. 113 min. www.miss-lovely.com

On an ocean liner where there's always music or a masked ball to occupy the wealthy passengers, the desirable Daïnah, mixed-race wife (métisse) of the ship's black magician, has a fateful encounter with a white engine mechanic (Charles Vanel). “One of the most mysterious, sultry and sombre tales ever made in France.” -Time Out Film Guide.  Imported 35mm print from the Institut Français! Subtitles. Preceded at 5:30 by Georges MélièsA Trip to the Moon (Le voyage dans la lune, France, 1902), the famous silent film in which the moon gets a rocket ship in the eye! We will show a 35mm print of the new color-tinted restoration that opened the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Total running time approx. 70 min. Special admission $10; Cinematheque members, CIA I.D. holders, and age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners.

Harold Lloyd's most popular comedy of the 1920s finds the clueless, bespectacled boy-next-door doing whatever it takes to become popular on campus—even joining the college football team! GO DOWN DEATH
USA, 2013, Aaron Schimberg
Step aside, David Lynch and Guy Maddin. Make room for Aaron Schimberg and his mysterious, malignant new amalgam of American Gothic, surrealism, frontier tall tale, and outsider art. Shot in black-and-white16mm, Go Down Death (which is based on folk tales by the fictional Jonathan Mallory Sinus) is an apocalyptic fable set in a crumbling village haunted by disease, superstition, and the supernatural, where prostitutes and johns inhabit a dingy brothel and soldiers and shape-shifting doctors wander about. "An astonishing, out-of-nowhere film…Amidst all the cookie-cutter indies, Aaron Schimberg’s Go Down Death casts a mysterious spell…Highly recommended." -Filmmaker Magazine.  Cleveland premiere. Blu-ray. 88 min. www.godowndeath.com

DORMANT BEAUTY
BELLA ADDORMENTATA
Italy, 2012, Marco Bellocchio
Toni Servillo (The Great Beauty, Il Divo) and Isabelle Huppert star in the new film by master Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio (Good Morning, Night; My Mother's Smile). Inspired by the controversial Englaro case that polarized Italy in 2009 (the father of a young woman who had been in a coma for 17 years tried to get her legally taken off of life support), the movie tells four separate stories that revolve around euthanasia or reflect the Englaro affair: two young lovers take opposite sides on the issue, a famous actress attends to her coma-stricken daughter, a doctor falls in love with a sedated, suicidal drug addict, a legislator in Berlusconi's party anguishes over a vote outlawing mercy killing. “Marco Bellocchio is one of the great filmmakers of Italian cinema, and, still working at 74, he may be the greatest of those living. But his movies, when they're released in the States at all, come and go like zephyrs…Don't let this one slip through your fingers.” –Village Voice. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. 114 min. www.emergingpictures.com/series/made-in-italy/ Shown in the Mandel Screening Room on the third floor of the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Joseph McCullough Center, 11610 Euclid Ave.  Park free in the CIA lot on the east side of the building (off E. 117th St.), and enter the building through the east door. FILTH
UK, 2013, Jon S. Baird
James McAvoy, playing against type, is unforgettable as an amoral, sociopathic Scottish cop who will do anything (sex, drugs, back-stabbing, etc.) to win a departmental promotion. This lurid new adaptation of a novel by Irvine West (Trainspotting) co-stars Jamie Bell, Eddie Marsan, Imogen Poots, and Jim Broadbent. "There’s in-yer-face cinema, and then there’s in-yer-face, down-yer-throat and throw-it-back-up-all-over-the-pavement cinema...You’ll be scraping this film out from under your fingernails for weeks." -Time Out London. "A hugely entertaining breath of foul air fueled by McAvoy's impressively ugly star performance." -The Hollywood Reporter. No one under 18 admitted! Cleveland theatrical premiere. Blu-ray. 97 min. magnetreleasing.com/filth/  Shown in the Mandel Screening Room on the third floor of the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Joseph McCullough Center, 11610 Euclid Ave.  Park free in the CIA lot on the east side of the building (off E. 117th St.), and enter the building through the east door. LES CHEVAUX DE DIEU
Morocco/Tunisia/Belgium/France, 2012, Nabil Ayouch
This powerful, affecting, and cinematic drama (which has a 100% “fresh” rating on RottenTomatoes.com as of 6/5) imagines how four young friends living in the slums of Morocco morphed into suicide bombers who participated in the notorious Casablanca bombings of 2003, during which 45 died. A multiple prizewinner at various international film festivals, this was also Morocco's official entry for this year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
