SOMEONE IN LOVE opens in
Cleveland on Friday March 15 th exclusively at the Cedar Lee
Theatre.]

Akiko (Rin Takanashi) is a pretty
Japanese co-ed paying her way through college by working as a call
girl in LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE. After finding out that her
grandmother is in Tokyo looking for her and having a fight with her
controlling boyfriend (Ryō Kase), however, she isn't in much of a
mood to work. After riding around in a taxi for some time, Akiko
eventually shows up at her client's house. Takashi (Tadashi Okuno) is
an older professor of sociology, the same subject Akiko is currently
studying. It's not clear if they have sex, but the following morning
the old man treats the girl more like a daughter than a sexual
conquest, and even tries to smooth things over with her boyfriend.
Some subtle connections are made. And then the movie just ends. This
is a wonderfully shot and acted film with some real moments of
emotional resonance. It's also meandering and vague, and while
Iranian maestro Abbas Kiarostami surely has something he's trying to
say here, exactly what that might be eluded me. Watching LIKE
SOMEONE IN LOVE is still a
strangely pleasant, almost hypnotic experience, but for me at least,
ultimately an unsatisfying one. 2 1/2 out of 4 stars.
